Emergency c-section restores calm

Wednesday, 29 December.

I had just finished paying for my son’s haircut at the children’s salon, when a text from dad-to-be, Patrick, comes through: “Can you come ASAP?!”.

I took a moment to appreciate how well the timing worked out (imagine rushing out of the salon with a kid that only got half a haircut!), then rushed straight home to get my camera bag. Changed into my scrubs, grabbed my car keys and drove straight through to Life Kingsbury Hospital, 35 minutes away from me.

Thankfully, the roads were so quiet and the hospital even quieter. The long-term affects of Covid vibes, of course! I navigated straight up to the maternity and delivery wing and found both Tess and Patrick absorbing the news that due to low fluids, an emergency c-section would be best for the delivery of their baby.

As we waited for the team to get ready in theatre I was able to subtly capture the moments the soon-to-be parents were going through, knowing that the moment when they would meet their child was so close…

As you can imagine, the sudden news of a change of birth plan and being rushed into theatre, is an incredibly overwhelming experience for new parents. I take great pride in being able to document every emotion and memory, but being there to support them through the process is also my great honour.

Once this beautiful little girl came out, all the rushing, worrying, chaos that her parents felt melted into complete calm. The sudden change is so evident in the photos! One day, this little one will grow up loving to hear about her birth story, and adore sharing the photos with her family…

Welcome to the world, precious angel!
