About me

You’ve waited for your pregnancy forever, and it’s a special time in your life. I want to make sure your birth is captured delicately and beautifully so you’ll have your birth story to cherish for years to come.

Yellow Lemon Birth Photography specialises in capturing discreet births. As a premier birth photographer, I am based in Cape Town and have been photographing births for over three years. I also travel to different parts of South Africa.

More about me as a birth photographer

My name is Kristen van Staden and I am a single mom of three busy little people. I have two girls and a bubbly boy giving me hands-on experience as a mom. I also travel to different parts of South Africa should your delivery take place in a different part of the country.

My husband tragically passed away in a motorbike accident when I was only three weeks pregnant with our third baby. Having experienced this kind of tragedy, I appreciate special and historic moments changing your life. It also helps me connect with clients who have also suffered losses. We should treasure special moments, and this fuels my passion for birth photography and capturing the emotions your family feels during a life-changing event. At your birth, you can expect a calm and unobtrusive presence as I discreetly capture moments that can never be reenacted.

Showing a child the story of how he/she came into life and how much he/she is appreciated is an incredible gift to a parent and the siblings and is one of my favourite moments to capture.

Treasure your memories

I believe those first memories and stories of love and connection are the most precious heirloom we can give to our children.

I am the Head of South African Birth Photographers Association (SABPA), working hard behind the scenes to build and protect this beautiful industry. We hold birth photographers to the highest standards, and most private hospitals in South Africa only use birth photographers registered through SABPA.

I believe a birth photographer should understand and respect the birth space of a mother and her birth partner. They need to show empathy and be understanding, while considering the health and human aspects of birth.
