Two sets of newborn twins

home baby nursery twins newborn session with dogs cape town_0042.jpg

On 11 July 2019, I had the wonderful responsibility to document the birth of the Spies Twins, born via caesarian section at Mediclinic Panorama Hospital. The boys were born just two minutes apart, and their birth was certainly a unique experience! A few weeks later, I went to their home in Malmesbury for their newborn session.

A year later I was lucky enough to photograph a second set of beautiful twin boys, born to the the uncle of the first set of twin boys. Confusing right? Two brothers, both with twin boys - what are the chances? Especially since apparently, the twin gene is passed on from mom (take this fun quiz by Mama Natural to find out what your chances are of having twins!)…

Back to the second set of twins — they were born premature and were well looked after in ICU by the lovely staff at Netcare Blaauwberg for a few weeks. Once mom, Alida, had a discharge date, we booked our session for just one day after they arrived home! How very special to celebrate the arrival of these little boys with cake and some new family portraits with their older brother. I’m not sure what he enjoyed more - meeting his new baby brothers or the sprinkles on the cake!

Alida kindly insisted I bring cake home for my three, and did they not just lick every last sprinkle up too! My children certainly agree that I have the “bestest” clients ever!

Here’s what Alida had to say about their experience:

It was an absolute privilege to have Kristen do our newborn shoot. Our twin boys were born at 29 weeks and only came home and got to meet their 3 year old brother after more than six weeks in the NICU. We wanted to capture our older son’s excitement about the arrival of his baby brothers and couldn’t wish for a better photographer than Kristen to do it. She made us all feel so comfortable. It didn’t feel like a photoshoot, it just felt like my husband and I were playing with our three beautiful sons and Kristen were capturing the moment. We absolutely love the images and will treasure them forever.
